Erectile Dysfunction is the inability to attain or maintain an erection for sexual intercourse. The condition is rarely talked about, but it is more common than not. While most men who have it are 70 or older, erectile dysfunction can happen at any age. About 5% of men in their 40s have complete erectile dysfunction, and around 15% of men in their 70s have the condition.
Erectile Dysfunction
Three components can be affected. Those components are ejaculation and climax, libido, and the ability to maintain an erection. If there are issues with ejaculation and climax, the man is having difficulties with orgasm. The lack of libido is the lack of interest or desire for sex. If it is difficult to maintain an erection, it is difficult to have sex and can be uncomfortable for both partners.
Physical and psychological issues can cause erectile dysfunction. Sometimes it's a combination of both. Either way, erectile dysfunction is a clear sign of more severe health issues.
Common physical causes include:
• Penis injury
• High blood pressure
• High cholesterol
• Diabetes
• Obesity
• Parkinson’s disease
• Heart disease
• Tobacco use
• Alcoholism
• Substance abuse
• Sleep disorders
• Medications
Common psychological causes include:
• Depression
• Stress
• Anxiety
• Relationship complications
In some cases, the stress and worry of physical conditions can be the cause of mental diseases. The medications prescribed for blood pressure, depression, and pain are all contributing factors. Keeping your physical health under control is the key to avoiding erectile dysfunction as you age.
There are some preventative measures for erectile dysfunction. The best way is to live a healthy lifestyle.
• Exercise and drink water daily.
• Make a conscious effort to reduce and manage stress.
• Seek counseling for depression or anxiety.
• Schedule regular doctors visit.
• Quit smoking.
• Limit alcohol consumption or choose not to drink at all.
